J-bolt (J-hook)
Hook bolt with nut and washer: catches the fabric edge and pulls it tight to the steel.

A J-bolt is a galvanized or stainless steel bolt bent into a J-shaped hook at one end, with a threaded shank, nut and washer at the other. On shade structures the hook catches the edge cable or the edge pocket of the fabric, and the threaded end passes through a hole in a steel angle, frame member or plate. Turning the nut draws the hook back and pulls the fabric edge tight towards the steel. A row of J-bolts along an edge spreads the pull evenly, and each one can be adjusted on its own during installation and maintenance.
Also called J-hook, J-hook bolt, hook bolt
Where it is used
- Tensioning fabric edges fixed to steel angles and frames
- Hooking the edge cable or edge pocket to the shade frame
- Carport and parking shade fabric edges
- Fixing a new fabric to the existing steel when re-fabricing
Materials and sizes
Commonly available in hot-dip galvanized steel or stainless steel, with matching nuts and washers. Hook size, rod diameter and thread length on request.
Questions about this part
How do I order the right J-bolt?
Tell us the rod diameter, the thread length, the hook opening (the cable or pocket it must hold) and the thickness of the steel it passes through, or send a photo of the old one.
J-bolt or U-bolt: what is the difference?
A U-bolt has two threaded legs and clamps around a post or forms a loop. A J-bolt has one threaded leg and a hook, so it catches a cable or a fabric edge and is tightened from one side through a single hole.
Galvanized or stainless J-bolts?
Hot-dip galvanized is economical and common on painted steel frames. Stainless is chosen for visible edges and near water. Try to keep nuts and washers in the same metal as the bolt.
